Today:

Frequent heavy snow showers initially in coastal areas will spread inland during the day, perhaps bringing some travel disruption. Western areas should stay mainly dry and bright, however. Windy overall, with a chance of coastal gales and feeling bitterly cold. Maximum temperature 1 °C.

Tonight:

Snow showers gradually becoming lighter and less frequent during the evening, then moving offshore overnight. Icy patches forming as skies clear with another widespread and locally hard frost developing. Minimum temperature -3 °C.

Sunday:

A sunny and frosty morning, then some uncertainty by the afternoon with many areas at risk of further snowfall. Not as windy as Saturday, but still bitterly cold. Maximum temperature 1 °C.

Outlook for Monday to Wednesday:

Mainly dry and sunny Monday, coastal snow showers easing. More changeable Tuesday and Wednesday with some snow likely. Very cold at first, less so later and not as windy.

Rather changeable, as Atlantic frontal systems attempt to cross the UK from the west to bring occasional outbreaks of rain, but preceded by snow in some areas, more especially central, northern and eastern parts of the UK, perhaps giving some significant snow accumulations in places, particularly on northern hills. These low pressure systems, whilst could bring some periods of strong winds, will be interspersed with quieter, drier interludes under transient ridges of high pressure with the potential for frost, and wintry showers along coasts exposed to northerly winds. A continuation of this general pattern is favoured into the following week, although perhaps with temperatures trending closer to average such that the frequency of wintry hazards, especially in the south, may reduce slightly.

The outlook through the second half of January is very uncertain, with no strong indication for any particular weather pattern to dominate. As such, conditions are most likely to be changeable. Spells of wet, windy and mild weather are possible at times, along with colder, drier interludes with overnight frost and fog. Snow and ice remain possible, especially in central and northern parts of the UK, but the chance of these is lower than earlier in the month.
