Today:

A grey start with patchy light rain or drizzle. Turning brighter by lunchtime, especially in the east, with some sunshine. Rain returning to the far west later as winds strengthen. Feeling warm in the sunshine. Maximum temperature 24 °C.

Tonight:

Dry initially this evening in the east, but rain in the west will spread across the region. The rain heavy at times with strengthening winds, before clearing to showers later. Minimum temperature 12 °C.

Wednesday:

Showers quickly becoming confined to the far west on Wednesday leaving a largely dry and bright day. A little cooler but still warm in the sunshine with winds also easing. Maximum temperature 22 °C.

Outlook for Thursday to Saturday:

Early showers clearing on Thursday to sunny spells. Rain returns on Friday, before turning drier and brighter Saturday once early fog clears. Temperatures returning nearer to average for early October.

High pressure will likely be in place over southern UK through the first few days of this period. This means plenty of dry weather to be had here, albeit with some chilly nights and overnight and morning fog in places. In the north, a rather more changeable pattern will continue, with occasional rain and windy conditions at times. Broadly changeable weather patterns look to continue through to mid-month, with ridges of high pressure extending from the southwest, interspersed by Atlantic frontal systems. These could be associated with quite deep and fast-moving depressions, bringing the potential for windy weather more widely, but perhaps more likely in the north and east. Temperatures probably near or slightly above normal overall, but with some day to day oscillations.

Quite an uncertain period of weather, with earlier signals of reliably wetter than normal weather now looking less likely. That being said, the middle of the month could be a quite a changeable period of weather overall, with the wettest weather most likely towards parts of the west and possibly south. It is quite plausible that marked regional variation in rainfall amounts will occur. Temperatures are likely to remain broadly above average overall.
