Today:

This morning, some cloud is lingering across northern coasts, but elsewhere inland there is dense fog which will gradually clear. Becoming cloudy by lunchtime perhaps with the odd spot of rain, but with occasional bright spells in the afternoon. Mild. Maximum temperature 21 °C.

Tonight:

Cloudy through the night, with spots of rain continuing and perhaps some heavy spells in the east later during the night. Light winds to start but becoming breezy by sunrise. Minimum temperature 9 °C.

Wednesday:

On Wednesday, outbreaks of rain will clear eastwards leaving sunny spells and a cooler feel in a fresh northerly breeze. Some light showers arriving in the west during the evening. Maximum temperature 17 °C.

Outlook for Thursday to Saturday:

On Thursday, sunny spells with showers easing, and feeling cool in a northwesterly breeze. Cloud thickening into Friday, bringing rain and blustery winds. Becoming more settled on Saturday.

It will likely be quite changeable through the middle of October, as a series of low pressure systems run across the North Atlantic, often to the north and northwest of the UK, bringing occasional bands of rain and strong winds, but interspersed with brighter and more showery conditions. Rain will be most prevalent across hills in the west and especially northwest, where above average rainfall is likely through this period. Longer drier interludes are more favoured in sheltered southern and eastern parts, but even here it is likely to be wetter than during recent weeks. Whilst brief cooler interludes are possible, temperatures are likely to be a little above average in many areas for the period as a whole.

The remainder of October and into early November will probably maintain a changeable pattern overall, with areas of low pressure often passing close to the UK from the North Atlantic, interspersed by occasional but short-lived ridges of high pressure. This regime will bring showers or longer spells of rain at times, with the wettest and windiest weather typically in the west and northwest, driest conditions more favoured in sheltered southern and eastern parts. Whilst some occasional colder interludes will be possible at times, temperatures are likely to be near or a little above average for the period as a whole.
