Today:

An icy start for many this morning, with further wintry showers through today, mainly across Devon and Cornwall. Staying largely dry in eastern counties with lengthy sunny periods. Feeling very cold in the northerly breeze. Quickly turning frosty after dark. Maximum temperature 5 °C.

Tonight:

Further wintry showers across Cornwall and Devon overnight, leading to the risk of ice and slippery conditions on untreated surfaces. Turning widely frosty with a severe frost in some spots. Minimum temperature -4 °C.

Sunday:

Another cold day with sunny spells and wintry showers. Snow accumulations are possible in places, mainly over the Moors, with eastern counties remaining mostly dry. Lighter winds, though feeling cold. Maximum temperature 5 °C.

Outlook for Monday to Wednesday:

Largely sunny and cold on Monday with wintry showers possible in Devon and Cornwall. Perhaps turning somewhat less cold thereafter with rain or snow at times. Frosts and ice likely.

Rather changeable, as Atlantic frontal systems attempt to cross the UK from the west to bring occasional outbreaks of rain, but preceded by snow in some areas, more especially central, northern and eastern parts of the UK, perhaps giving some significant snow accumulations in places, particularly on northern hills. These low pressure systems, whilst could bring some periods of strong winds, will be interspersed with quieter, drier interludes under transient ridges of high pressure with the potential for frost, and wintry showers along coasts exposed to northerly winds. A continuation of this general pattern is favoured into the following week, although perhaps with temperatures trending closer to average such that the frequency of wintry hazards, especially in the south, may reduce slightly.

The outlook through the second half of January is very uncertain, with no strong indication for any particular weather pattern to dominate. As such, conditions are most likely to be changeable. Spells of wet, windy and mild weather are possible at times, along with colder, drier interludes with overnight frost and fog. Snow and ice remain possible, especially in central and northern parts of the UK, but the chance of these is lower than earlier in the month.
