A continuation of the recent cloudy and mild weather through Boxing Day with some fog patches first thing which may be slow to clear. There may be some brighter spells developing in the east, with further drizzle over western hills. Maximum temperature 11 °C.

Tonight:

Cloud tending to thicken across the region with further fog and drizzle over the hills. Quite misty generally perhaps with fog forming later in the night further east. Minimum temperature 2 °C.

Friday:

Another cloudy mild day with light winds, patchy fog, and some rain or drizzle over western hills. Any brighter spells likely confined to the east of the region. Maximum temperature 11 °C.

Outlook for Saturday to Monday:

Cloudy on Saturday as rain moves eastwards, with cooler, brighter weather following. A breezy day Sunday, bright in places with the east staying mostly dry. Perhaps turning wet on Monday.

Fronts or low-pressure areas are increasingly likely to move south/east across much of the country, bringing an increased threat of heavy rain and perhaps strong winds. As colder air from the north progresses southwards, the risk of sleet and snow increases, especially in northern areas, but this will depend each day on where the thermal boundary lies. Temperatures will start around average but will become a little below average for most, especially in the north, though milder interludes are still possible in the south. While there is moderate to high confidence in this trend, confidence is low for the exact positioning of any systems, which will be crucial in determining which areas see rain or snow.

Confidence in this period is fairly low, but continuing from the previous period, there remains a chance of rather unsettled and cool conditions continuing at first, with the wettest conditions perhaps focussed more over the south (still with a risk of snow on the northern edge), with sleet and snow showers further north. Then, through the rest of January, something more climatological could return with the wettest and coolest conditions further north, and with higher pressure further south, it is more likely to be drier, and at times milder here than elsewhere.
