This Evening and Tonight:

Cloud and drizzle this evening, this gradually clearing away southeastwards by midnight. Then dry with lengthy clear spells, with isolated fog patches. Turning chilly, particularly in rural areas, where grass frost is possible. Minimum temperature 4 °C.

Wednesday:

A mostly dry day with a chilly and sunny start. Variable cloud with sunny spells, but cloud perhaps thickening somewhat later in the day. Winds mostly light. Maximum temperature 16 °C.

Outlook for Thursday to Saturday:

Eastern areas often drier with the best of brighter spells. Western hills frequently cloudier with some patchy light rain or drizzle. Occasionally breezy. Chilly nights and fog patches possible.

High pressure is expected to prevail, leading to plenty of dry, settled weather. Cloud amounts will be variable, and some overnight fog is likely, some of which will be slow to clear through the morning. Spells of rain may affect the extreme north, most likely Orkney and Shetland, along with some stronger winds, but even here the emphasis is mainly on dry weather. Temperatures will most likely be near average or in places pleasantly warm by day, at least at first, but with some chilly nights and chance of isolated frost where skies remain clear. There is however a small chance that it could turn colder and more showery from the east through mid-October. A breakdown to something more unsettled will probably develop towards the end of this period.

The final third of October will likely see a transition to more unsettled conditions across the UK, with high pressure slipping away, though the timing and manner of this is low confidence. Whether this takes the form of successive weather systems moving in from the Atlantic or a rather slower-evolving weather pattern remains to be seen, but there is a greater chance of most if not all places seeing spells of rain or showers and possibly strong winds later in the month, and continuing into the start of November. Temperatures will probably be close to average overall.
