Mostly dry at first, but rain will soon spread in from the west, becoming widespread, persistent and locally heavy, especially over higher ground. Conditions should gradually turn drier later in the afternoon as the rain clears away. Maximum temperature 21 °C.

Tonight:

Remaining cloudy with further outbreaks of rain, these becoming increasingly confined to higher ground. Becoming breezy overnight, with conditions turning largely dry by the end of the night. Minimum temperature 17 °C.

Thursday:

Dry and brighter at first with some sunny spells. Cloud soon thickening from the west, bringing outbreaks of rain during the afternoon, becoming persistent through the evening. Remaining breezy. Maximum temperature 21 °C.

Outlook for Friday to Sunday:

Rain clearing to sunny spells and blustery showers on Friday. Largely dry on Saturday, with lighter winds and sunny spells. Changeable, windy and wet on Sunday. Temperatures near average.

Overall, a fairly unsettled period is likely, with many places seeing showers or longer spells of rain at times, interspersed by drier periods. Rain will likely be most frequent across northern and western areas, while the south and east are more likely to see longer drier interludes. There is also the potential for some strong and gusty winds, particularly in the northwest. Temperatures are likely to be near average, although brief warm or very warm spells are possible, especially in the south.

Confidence is low from mid-September onwards, however a gradual transition towards slightly more settled conditions for the second half of the month is currently signalled. The distribution of rainfall is uncertain at this range, but drier conditions compared to earlier in the month are likely for most, with any wetter spells generally more likely across the northwest. Temperatures are likely to be around average overall, although some warm spells are possible, particularly in the south.
