Sunny spells and heavy showers

Today:

Rather cold with a mix of sunny spells and, especially in west, frequent showers which will be heavy at times with a risk of hail and thunder. Breezy near western coasts with occasionally strong northwesterly winds, winds light in east. Maximum temperature 12 °C.

Tonight:

Some late sunny spells, then clear spells overnight, with showers, the showers becoming less frequent but still occasionally heavy. Touch of frost possible in sheltered spots, but breezy near coasts. Minimum temperature 2 °C.

Thursday:

Another rather cold day with a mix of sunny spells and showers, the showers tending to become less heavy through the afternoon and evening. Fresh to strong northerly winds. Maximum temperature 12 °C.

Outlook for Friday to Sunday:

Showers and northerly winds ease from west through Friday. Bright start Saturday cloud and rain edging east in afternoon. Morning rain Sunday then sunny spells and showers in afternoon.

Changeable and at times rather unsettled conditions look to dominate at first, with low pressure often close by. This means periods of rain or showers, some of which could be heavy, for many places, though some drier interludes are also expected. As this period progresses, high pressure is likely to begin to build from the south bringing more in the way of settled weather. Temperatures likely cooler than average to begin, but tending to recover as the period progresses, perhaps becoming rather warm by the end of the period, especially in the south.

Patterns which bring more settled weather are more likely to dominate towards the end of May. Whilst further rain and showers are possible at times, there is likely to be longer spells of fine and dry weather. Into June, more mixed conditions are likely with spells of rain and showers, but also some drier weather at times. Temperatures are most likely to be near or slightly above average overall, with some warm weather possible at times.
