Headline:

Dry start to Thursday. Heavy rain and strong winds later.

Today:

After a cold start it will be a dry morning with sunny spells. Turning cloudier through the afternoon as rain spreads northeastwards, rain heavy at times. Light southeasterly winds at first but soon strengthening with gales in the afternoon. Maximum temperature 11 °C.

Tonight:

A wet and windy evening with heavy rain and gale force winds, especially over the Hebrides. Remaining windy overnight but rain clearing northeastwards to become mostly dry with clear spells. Minimum temperature 5 °C.

Friday:

Mostly dry morning with sunny spells. Heavy rain at times in the north and east this afternoon, remaining largely dry in the west. Windy throughout, with gales affecting the Hebrides. Maximum temperature 13 °C.

Outlook for Saturday to Monday:

Remaining unsettled and mostly cloudy with showers and at times longer spells of heavy rain. Rain most prolonged through Saturday. Staying rather windy throughout.

The changeable and at times unsettled weather is likely to continue through early November, with low pressure dominating the UK. This means further showers or longer spells of rain at times. All parts could see some heavy rain, but it is likely that western areas will be wettest. Strong winds are likely at times, with gales or severe gales a possibility, especially in the west. Equally there should also be some, at least brief, drier or clearer interludes, these more prevalent further east, but perhaps becoming a little more widespread and long-lasting by the end of the period. With winds predominantly blowing from a westerly or southwesterly quadrant, above average temperatures are most likely, with a reduced incidence of overnight frost and fog, compared to normal, especially at first.

A gradual transition from an unsettled westerly type to something less unsettled is anticipated through the middle part of the month. With time, greater incidences of high pressure look set to affect the UK, bringing more in the way of dry weather, but also increasing the chances of overnight fog and frost. Later in the month any low pressure systems will likely be steered to the northwest of the UK. As such the majority of any wet and windy weather is more likely to affect areas further to the north. Overall, temperatures look to pan out near to a little above average.
