Today:

For many, a dry and mostly cloudy day with a few bright or sunny intervals breaking through. From late morning, scattered wintry showers will spread southwards from the north, slowly dying out as they do so. Feeling cold. Maximum temperature 5 °C.

Tonight:

A few wintry showers through the evening and overnight, these mainly in the north and western coasts with areas further inland drier. Clear spells, becoming longer later in night. Cold. Minimum temperature -3 °C.

Friday:

Mostly cloudy with some bright intervals and wintry showers in the north and west. Elsewhere will be largely dry with longer sunny spells. Feeling cold. Maximum temperature 4 °C.

Outlook for Saturday to Monday:

Dry with sunny spells Saturday, turning cloudier later. Winds strengthen on Sunday with coastal gales as a band of rain and snow spreads eastwards. Cloudy with outbreaks of rain Monday.

Showers or longer spells of rain as well as occasional strong winds are most likely as Atlantic low pressure systems dominate in the vicinity of the UK. Some heavy rain is likely in places, with some snow at times in the north, mainly on high ground. Temperatures varying from around average to cold at times, especially in the north. While unsettled weather is likely to continue, there may be some drier interludes between weather systems. Later in the period, there is a chance that more prolonged drier and settled conditions may begin to develop.

There are signals for both unsettled conditions, bringing a risk of some heavy rain, but also periods of drier, more settled weather, which may mean colder conditions. The latter, more settled pattern is looking slightly more probable at this stage, especially early in this period.
