Today:

A cloudy start with some patchy rain in the west. Otherwise mainly dry with some bright spells breaking through by afternoon, these mainly across the east. Western Isles staying cloudy with the odd light shower. Maximum temperature 14 °C.

Tonight:

Mainly dry this evening and overnight, the odd shower in the northwest. Persistent rain will spread into the northwest later in the night. Clear spells in the east. Minimum temperature 7 °C.

Wednesday:

Cloudy with rain spreading southeast across all parts, lingering into the afternoon in the east. Turning drier in the north and west through the afternoon. A colder day. Maximum temperature 10 °C.

Outlook for Thursday to Saturday:

Dry for most of Thursday but rain spreading east later. Unsettled with showers or longer spells of rain on Friday and Saturday.

It is increasingly likely that unsettled conditions will affect the UK over the Easter Holiday weekend, with the potential for strong winds and heavy rain at times. The wettest and windiest weather is more likely towards the west and north of the country. Beyond Easter, a broad northwest-southeast split is most likely, though the extent of high pressure into southern areas is unclear. That said, northern and western parts are more likely to remain rather unsettled overall, with further spells of wind and rain, and areas further southeast should see the best of the drier, clearer interludes. Temperatures probably fairly close to average overall, but occasional warmer spells are possible in the south.

The broad northwest-southeast split is most likely to be in place at the start of this period. However, the middle to latter part of the month is particularly uncertain, with conflicting signals as to whether high or low pressure will be dominant, but perhaps with a reduced chance of spells of windy weather compared to earlier in the month. As such, the scenario of April showers may be the most likely set-up, though with some drier, brighter days at times. Temperatures are unlikely to deviate too far from average overall, but some warmer days are likely where light winds and sunshine combine.
