It will be mostly cloudy with occasional light rain and drizzle, this becoming more widespread across Shetland later in the day with mist and haar possible. A few brighter spells in Orkney. Winds mainly moderate from the west or southwest. Maximum temperature 16 °C.

Tonight:

Mist and drizzle could be extensive at times across Shetland with light rain and drizzle. Drier spells across Orkney with the low cloud thinning and clearing at times. Minimum temperature 12 °C.

Thursday:

Remaining mostly cloudy with mist and drizzle, this most extensive across Shetland. The low cloud clearing Orkney at times will some brighter spells. Light or moderate southwest winds. Maximum temperature 17 °C.

Outlook for Friday to Sunday:

Still some thicker cloud and patchy rain at first on Friday, but becoming mainly dry and very warm with plenty of sunshine. Haar possible over Shetland at times, winds light.

The heatwave from the weekend will be gradually eroded from the west early next week as a cold front arrives from the Atlantic. This will bring the chance of some heavy rain or showers, perhaps thundery, especially in northern and western areas. Towards and beyond midweek, a rather changeable pattern is anticipated with some rain or showers possible at times, which could be heavy and thundery, and particularly focussed in western and northwestern areas. Longer drier spells are most likely towards the south and east, although even here some showers may be possible at times. Temperatures are likely to remain above average, especially in the south and east where further spells of very warm or hot weather remain possible.

A continuation of the broad themes from earlier in the month at first, with high pressure probably dominating the south and lower pressure more favoured to affect the north and northwest. Temperatures are likely to end up above average overall with a continued, and perhaps higher than normal, chance of occasional hot spells or heatwaves, especially further to the southeast. However, around the turn of the month, there is a signal for perhaps more widely unsettled weather to develop, though the details of this remain rather uncertain.
