1. Is the refreshed app live?
Yes, the refreshed app was launched on 14 January, 2026 and is now live.
2. Is the refreshed app released as an update to the legacy app, or do I need to migrate across to the new app?
If you have automatic updates switched on, you’ll receive the refreshed app as a normal update. If you don’t use automatic updates, you’ll be prompted to update the app manually. In time, the older version will no longer be supported. So, we encourage everyone to ensure they have the latest version of the app to continue receiving new features, improvements and security updates.
3. Will I be able to help shape the app?
Yes, your feedback will continue to play an important role in shaping the new app. We’ll be asking users to share their thoughts on the experience, the clarity of the information and how useful the forecasts are in helping them take action. We also look at anonymous usage insights to understand how people are using the app day-to-day. All of this helps us decide what to improve next and which new features to prioritise. If you would like to provide feedback or report a bug on the refreshed app, please fill in the relevant survey shown within the app so it can be considered in our prioritisation.
4. How do I download the refreshed app?
The refreshed app will be available to download from the Apple App Store and the Google Play Store.
5. What happened to the Met Office app - it looks different?
We have refreshed our app to make forecasts clearer and more usable. We've also upgraded the technology behind the scenes to make future updates more efficient. We released a beta (test) version of the app in summer 2025, and have continued to make improvements since then based on the needs of our users.
6. Why did you develop the refreshed app?
Users told us our legacy app felt outdated, cluttered, and lacking in colour, clarity, and personality. Recognising the need for a better design and user experience, we took the opportunity to refresh the interface and simplify how information is presented. While keeping the same trusted forecast data, we focused on reducing complexity, improving clarity, and creating a more engaging look and feel.
Built in 2016, the legacy app relied on two separate codebases for iOS and Android, making updates costly and time-consuming. Rather than continue adapting the old system, we rebuilt the app using modern technology and a single codebase, enabling faster improvements and easier maintenance. This new approach enhances performance, reduces duplication, and provides a flexible platform for future development.
7. What approach did you take to develop the new-look app?
We tested an early version of the app with small group of users to check core features and gather early feedback. During this private beta phase, we refined the app through several iterations, improving functionality, performance and clarity based on feedback. Then we moved into public beta, so we could learn from real-world use at scale, and further shape the app based on what matters most to our users.
The feedback and insights we gathered from more than 18,000 users has directly informed design decisions and guided improvements. This approach is a more efficient way to build digital products, because it reduces time spent on features that don’t deliver value and leads to a better product for users.
We made the refreshed app available to users gradually so we can understand how people use it, gather meaningful feedback, respond to user needs and make improvements where required.
8. What does the refreshed app offer now and what’s coming next?
With our refreshed app, you can add daily or hourly widgets to your homescreen, get instant severe weather alerts for your saved locations, access all other UK weather warnings, check forecasts up to 7 days ahead, view pollen levels during the pollen season, explore interactive weather maps, access detailed weather information, watch the latest video forecast, and give feedback to help us improve the app.
Our weather warnings are now clearer and more useful, with visuals that make important information easier to interpret quickly.
We recently introduced a new wind card that shows wind speed, direction and maximum gusts in a simple compass-style view. This is intended to make wind information more user-friendly.
We'll add more features to the app over the coming months, including 14-day forecasts, regional and long-range text forecasts, improvements to the locations feature and weather map navigation, and the addition of mountain and beach forecast information.
9. Why aren’t all features from the legacy app available on the refreshed app?
We’ve built the refreshed app based on the features our users say they find most useful and add value for them. We’ve now added most key features from the legacy app, and we intend to add more features soon.
10. Why does the refreshed app show less information on one screen?
The refreshed app has been redesigned to make key weather information clearer and easier to read. Previously, the layout could feel cluttered, especially on smaller screens, so elements are now organised into dedicated sections. Recent improvements based on user feedback have made the layout more compact, allowing you to view more days and hours at a glance. The snapshot area has been reduced, and key details like maximum wind gusts and direction have been added for quicker access.
Our new design prioritises clarity and accessibility, ensuring information is easier to read for everyone, including users with accessibility needs. While some spacing remains to maintain readability, we’re continuing to explore ways to minimise unnecessary scrolling without compromising usability.
11. Why does the refreshed app look different from the old one?
Our legacy app was built in 2016 and had reached the limits of its design and technology. Our refreshed app uses a modern design system with clearer visuals. It’s designed to give a cleaner, more consistent experience across iOS and Android. We’ll continue adjusting the design based on what users tell us works best for them.
12. Has the app been “dumbed down”?
No, the underlying science and forecast data have not changed. The refreshed app presents the same trusted information in a clearer, easier-to-read format. We’re also continuing to add specialist features based on our world-leading forecast data.
13. Where can I find detailed information like UV and feels-like temperatures?
Some weather information appears in different locations than before. Wind speed, direction and gusts are now shown in multiple locations, including a clearer compass-style visual. UV levels, feels-like temperature and other detailed elements are below the hourly forecast and we've added maximum wind gusts to the snapshot area of the app. We'll continue to make improvements based on user feedback.
14. Why are some map layers from the legacy app not included?
Our refreshed app already includes interactive maps for rain, cloud and rain, temperature, and weather warnings. You can also see recent rainfall observations in the rainfall layer by clicking the 'Last 6 hours' button. Other specialist layers, such as surface pressure are not yet available. We prioritised map layers based on how useful users tell us they are, and we will consider adding more in future updates if people find them valuable.
15. Why does it feel harder to navigate on Android?
We’re aware that some Android users have had difficulties with navigation. The refreshed app is designed to be consistent across both platforms, and we’re continuing to refine the Android experience based on feedback and usage insights.
16. Why does the text look harder to read or less accessible?
The refreshed app follows modern accessibility standards, including clearer colour contrast, larger touch targets and improved spacing. We'll continue to review feedback and make adjustments to ensure the app remains easy to use for as many people as possible.
17. Why does it take more clicks to get to what I want?
Some information has been reorganised to improve clarity and avoid overwhelming users with too much detail in one place. We’re continuing to refine the navigation and will look at reducing the steps needed to reach frequently-used features.
18. What if I can’t find my location on the map or don’t know where I am?
We’ve improved how locations are shown on maps, but we know this is an area where users sometimes need clearer guidance. We’re reviewing ways to make the map easier to understand and will use user feedback to guide improvements.
19. Why does the radar show the last six hours? I want to see what’s coming.
The observational radar shows recent rainfall so users can track the path of the rainfall and see how it has been moving. Forecast layers show what is expected next. We recognise that some users want both views presented more clearly, and we’re looking at improvements that combine observational and forecast information more seamlessly.
20. I have previously purchased advert removal on the app. How do I get it back?
Users who purchased advert removal before version 3 of the app can restore this purchase by pressing the Menu button and selecting the 'Manage adverts' option. There users can select 'Restore previous purchases'.
21. What operating systems support the refreshed app?
The refreshed Met Office app requires the following operating systems:
iPhone, iPod touch and iPad requires 15.1 or later, Apple Vision requires visionOS 1.0 or later, Android requires 7.0 and up
22. How do I provide feedback on the refreshed app?
If you would like to provide feedback or report a bug on the refreshed app, please fill in the relevant survey shown within the app. The feedback survey can be accessed via buttons at the top and bottom of the refreshed app.
