The UK had its joint-fourth warmest September on record in a series which dates back to 1884, according to provisional figures from the Met Office.

It will be generally mild and cloudy overnight, with spells of drizzle mainly for northern hills. Some clear spells in the south and east bring a risk of fog patches before dawn. Winds easing to a light breeze. Minimum temperature 9 °C.

Tuesday:

Tuesday looks brighter than Monday, but still largely cloudy especially in the north. A risk of drizzly showers for most, with more persistent rain arriving in the north overnight. Maximum temperature 20 °C.

Outlook for Wednesday to Friday:

Rain clearing on Wednesday then feeling cooler with sunny spells, and showers mainly for northern coasts and hills. Showers then easing through Thursday before unsettled weather returns into Friday.

UK long range weather forecast

It will likely be quite changeable through the middle of October, as a series of low pressure systems run across the North Atlantic, often to the north and northwest of the UK, bringing occasional bands of rain and strong winds, but interspersed with brighter and more showery conditions. Rain will be most prevalent across hills in the west and especially northwest, where above average rainfall is likely through this period. Longer drier interludes are more favoured in sheltered southern and eastern parts, but even here it is likely to be wetter than during recent weeks. Whilst brief cooler interludes are possible, temperatures are likely to be a little above average in many areas for the period as a whole.

The remainder of October and into early November will probably maintain a changeable pattern overall, with areas of low pressure often passing close to the UK from the North Atlantic, interspersed by occasional but short-lived ridges of high pressure. This regime will bring showers or longer spells of rain at times, with the wettest and windiest weather typically in the west and northwest, driest conditions more favoured in sheltered southern and eastern parts. Whilst some occasional colder interludes will be possible at times, temperatures are likely to be near or a little above average for the period as a whole.
