A few showers may affect the northern coasts of Cornwall and Devon this evening. Otherwise, staying dry with some late sunshine. Skies clearing overnight and turning cold as winds ease, allowing some rural frost and perhaps the odd fog patch. Minimum temperature 3 °C.

Monday:

A sunny and chilly morning and remaining fine into the afternoon with prolonged periods of sunshine. Feeling cool with temperatures below average and a chilly northeasterly breeze. Maximum temperature 16 °C.

Outlook for Tuesday to Thursday:

High pressure will keep it generally dry and settled. Variable amounts of cloud with some sunshine at times. Cool at first with rural frosts possible, temperatures recovering to average later.

Continuation of the settled weather of the previous few days into Friday for most. Dry for the vast majority, with light winds and sunny spells by day; overnight there will be a risk of mist or isolated fog patches. However we then enter into a very uncertain period as thicker cloud and outbreaks of rain try to push in from the Atlantic. Confidence in any breakdown to unsettled weather however is very low, influenced by ex-Hurricane Gabrielle, which may approach the UK during this time. On balance some rain, and potentially some strong winds are likely to affect at least the west of the UK. The following week will most likely see a west to east split, with wettest weather remaining in western areas. Temperatures around to above average.

Confidence is very low in the weather regimes most likely to affect the UK during this period. On balance, slow-moving weather patterns are most favoured at first, possibly with high pressure centred to the west of the UK, and low pressure to the northeast, allowing a slightly cooler and more changeable flavour to the weather to develop. Towards mid-October a more unsettled pattern may become established as areas of low pressure over the North Atlantic move close to or over the UK, with an increased chance of windy conditions at times. Temperatures will probably recover to near-average.
