Low cloud in the north slowly lifts through the day but some spots of rain, chiefly across the higher parts of Cumbria. Possible brighter spells in the south later. Feeling warm for September with light winds. Maximum temperature 20 °C.

Tonight:

Mostly dry this evening and overnight with variable amounts of cloud, some clear spells. Thicker cloud arrives across the north of the region towards dawn with outbreaks of heavy rain. Minimum temperature 8 °C.

Wednesday:

Overcast with outbreaks of heavy and persistent rain, particularly across the hills and mountains. Becoming drier and brighter from the west during the afternoon. Maximum temperature 17 °C.

Outlook for Thursday to Saturday:

Drier and brighter on Thursday before another band of rain moves into the northwest into Friday. This clearing southwards on Saturday. Average temperatures by day but chilly at night.

A continuation of changeable weather is expected, as further frontal systems bring spells of rain, showers, and occasional strong winds. The wettest and windiest conditions are most likely across Scotland and Northern Ireland, but wet and windy weather may extend more widely across England and Wales at times. Between these unsettled spells, periods of drier and more settled weather are likely, especially further south and east, and may last for several days at a time. Temperatures are expected to be slightly above normal overall, but overnight fog and frost is possible during clearer, cooler nights.

The changeable and unsettled weather is likely to continue, with wet and windy weather even perhaps become more frequent. As is often the case for October, deeper areas of low pressure may also bring periods of very strong winds, especially across north and west. There is no reliable signal for any long-lasting settled weather, but fair days are likely between weather systems, especially in the south and east. Temperatures are expected to remain generally above average overall, although cooler interludes are possible.
