A bright start but turning gradually cloudier through the day with some light rain or drizzle possible across Cumbria. Staying generally dry elsewhere with the best of the sunshine in southern regions. Feeling warmer than in recent days. Maximum temperature 19 °C.

Tonight:

Low cloud and hill fog across the north of the region, thick enough to bring some light rain and drizzle. Drier in the south. Mild for the time of year. Minimum temperature 11 °C.

Tuesday:

Low cloud in the north slowly lifts through the day but some spot of rain will remain. Possible brighter spells in the south later. Feeling warm for September. Maximum temperature 21 °C.

Outlook for Wednesday to Friday:

Turning much wetter on Wednesday with some heavy rain. But drier once again on Thursday. Another band of rain moves into the northwest into Friday. Temperatures return to average.

Atlantic weather systems will continue to bring spells of rain, showers and occasional strong winds. The wettest and windiest conditions are most likely across northern and western areas, although wet and windy weather may extend more widely at times. Between these unsettled spells, periods of drier and more settled weather are likely, especially in the south and east, where they may last for a few days. Temperatures are expected to be slightly above normal overall, but overnight fog and frost is possible during clearer, cooler nights.

Through October, changeable and occasionally unsettled weather is likely to become more frequent, with spells of rain moving in from the Atlantic. Between these periods, drier and brighter interludes are expected. As is often the case for October, deeper areas of low pressure may also bring periods of very strong winds, especially across the north and west. Temperatures are expected to remain slightly above average overall, although brief cooler interludes are possible.
