Variable amounts of cloud and some bright or sunny spells. A few showers will break out through the day but many places will stay largely dry. Brisk westerly winds across Edinburgh and Lothian. Maximum temperature 18 °C.

Tonight:

Any showers will die away through this evening. Then the rest of the night will be mainly dry with clear periods. Chilly in some sheltered glens. Minimum temperature 8 °C.

Friday:

Starting off dry with some sunshine. Cloudier in the afternoon with a few passing showers. Maximum temperature 18 °C.

Outlook for Saturday to Monday:

Mostly dry over the weekend with sunny spells. Rain likely to spread northeast on Monday.

A generally rather changeable period looks likely, with many places likely to see some much needed rain or showers at times but also some more sunshine. Initially, some heavy rain looks likely across the northeast, with some showers elsewhere. After a drier, brighter few days, further unsettled conditions may develop for a while, these perhaps more likely towards more southern parts of the UK. Thereafter, further spells of dry, warm, sunny weather and cooler, wetter and breezier weather look likely as we head towards mid-August. Temperatures will likely be a little above average overall, and there is the potential for some very warm or hot spells, especially in the south, although perhaps not the heat we have seen in recent weeks.

Dry and settled conditions will probably dominate much of this period with high pressure patterns tending to affect the UK. This may be interrupted at times by Atlantic frontal systems, especially in the north, or thunderstorms in the south. However, overall rainfall amounts will likely be below normal. Temperatures will probably be above normal and some spells of hot weather and heatwaves are possible, especially in the south.
