Today:

Very cold and frosty to start, then a largely dry morning with plenty of sunshine. Sleet and snow showers arriving for some by this afternoon, these perhaps turning heavy in the south of the region, giving some local travel disruption. Maximum temperature 3 °C.

Tonight:

Sleet and snow showers clearing southwards early this evening, leaving a covering of snow and icy stretches in places. Becoming very cold with a severe frost in some inland spots. Minimum temperature -7 °C.

Monday:

After a very cold, frosty and icy start for some, plenty of crisp winter sunshine to come on Monday. Feeling cold with temperatures struggling to rise above freezing in places. Maximum temperature 2 °C.

Outlook for Tuesday to Thursday:

A frosty start on Tuesday, then mainly dry but some rain and hill snow is possible later. Gradually turning somewhat less cold and more unsettled on Wednesday and Thursday.

Rather changeable, as Atlantic frontal systems attempt to cross the UK from the west to bring occasional outbreaks of rain, but preceded by snow in some areas, more especially central, northern and eastern parts of the UK, perhaps giving some significant snow accumulations in places, particularly on northern hills. These low pressure systems, whilst could bring some periods of strong winds, will be interspersed with quieter, drier interludes under transient ridges of high pressure with the potential for frost, and wintry showers along coasts exposed to northerly winds. A continuation of this general pattern is favoured into the following week, although perhaps with temperatures trending closer to average such that the frequency of wintry hazards, especially in the south, may reduce slightly.

The outlook through the second half of January is very uncertain, with no strong indication for any particular weather pattern to dominate. As such, conditions are most likely to be changeable. Spells of wet, windy and mild weather are possible at times, along with colder, drier interludes with overnight frost and fog. Snow and ice remain possible, especially in central and northern parts of the UK, but the chance of these is lower than earlier in the month.
