Today:

Dry and largely cloudy, although some bright or sunny spells may occur this morning, with heavy rain reaching the Pennines by late afternoon. Feeling cold, especially as the wind strengthens this afternoon. Maximum temperature 6 °C.

Tonight:

Rain, often heavy, will move east with broken cloud and scattered heavy showers following. Later most showers fade away. Windy initially with a risk of coastal gales, overnight winds ease. Minimum temperature 5 °C.

Saturday:

Saturday sunny spells and scattered showers, which may be heavy at times. Light winds and temperatures close to average. Maximum temperature 10 °C.

Outlook for Sunday to Tuesday:

Sunday dry morning then rain spreading northeast. Monday bright and breezy with a chance of showers then wet and windy conditions arrive overnight, gradually clearing east through Tuesday. Generally mild.

A continuation of the broadly unsettled conditions is likely through this period. One area of low pressure, intiially close to northwestern areas at the start of this period, should soon clear away, but it is likely that further areas of low pressure will develop over the North Atlantic. These will likely progress eastwards towards the UK, but could become quite slow-moving in the vicinity of the UK, as they butt up against higher pressure to the east and north. As a result, the wettest conditions are more likely in western areas, but all parts could see heavy rain at times. Strong winds are also likely at times, again more likely in the west. Temperatures are expected to remain close to or above normal.

This period is likely to be changeable, with further spells of rain or showers and some strong winds at times, especially in the west and northwest. Hill snow is also a possibility, mainly in the north. However, there is a greater chance of spells of high pressure during this period, bringing more in the way of dry weather, compared to the unsettled conditions we are likely to see through the first couple of weeks of December. This will increase the chances of overnight fog and frost. Overall, near or slightly above average temperatures are most likely, though some colder spells are also possible, especially should any prolonged settled spells develop.
