A changeable day consisting of often cloudy skies, brief sunny intervals and occasional showers. These heavy with hail in places and wintry over higher ground. Blustery and feeling rather cold. Maximum temperature 7 °C.

Tonight:

Further showers, occasionally heavy, through this evening. These falling as snow over hills in the north and perhaps to lower levels before clearing overnight. Turning frosty with icy stretches. Minimum temperature -2 °C.

Tuesday:

A frosty start with a risk of ice in places. Thereafter a fine and crisp day and despite a cold northerly breeze, the sunshine will feel pleasant in sheltered spots. Maximum temperature 6 °C.

Outlook for Wednesday to Friday:

Probably dry on Wednesday and Thursday with some sunshine at times. Southerly winds freshening on Friday ahead of rain and hill snow later. Rather cold with overnight frosts and ice.

Showers or longer spells of rain, as well as occasional strong winds, are most likely at first as Atlantic low pressure systems dominate in the vicinity of the UK. Some heavy rain is likely in places, with some snow probable at times, mainly on high ground in the north. Temperatures varying from around, or a little above, average especially in the south to cold at times, mainly in the north. Although unsettled weather is likely to dominate at first, there will be some drier interludes between weather systems. These drier interludes will become increasingly likely and perhaps more prolonged through the period.

There are signals for both periods of unsettled conditions, bringing a risk of heavy rain and possibly strong winds, and periods of drier, more settled weather, which may mean slightly colder conditions. The more settled pattern is looking slightly more probable early in this period, with more unsettled conditions currently looking slightly more likely towards the end.
