A bright day with a mix of sunny spells and showers, the showers becoming heavier and more frequent, especially in the west, through the afternoon. Best of the sunshine towards Inverness and the Black Isle. Fresh southwesterly winds easing. Maximum temperature 13 °C.

Tonight:

Clear spells and occasionally heavy showers continue through the evening and overnight, especially in north and west. Chilly, risk of a touch of ground frost especially in sheltered eastern parts. Minimum temperature 3 °C.

Wednesday:

Another day of sunny spells and occasionally heavy showers, wintry over mountains, the showers easing a little through the afternoon and evening. Occasionally fresh southwesterly then northwesterly winds. Maximum temperature 12 °C.

Outlook for Thursday to Saturday:

Dry, bright morning Thursday but increasing cloud brings occasionally heavy rain through the afternoon. Rain clears overnight to leave Friday and Saturday with sunny spells and frequent heavy, blustery showers.

It will likely be quite changeable through the middle of October, as a series of low pressure systems run across the North Atlantic, often to the north and northwest of the UK, bringing occasional bands of rain and strong winds, but interspersed with brighter and more showery conditions. Rain will be most prevalent across hills in the west and especially northwest, where above average rainfall is likely through this period. Longer drier interludes are more favoured in sheltered southern and eastern parts, but even here it is likely to be wetter than during recent weeks. Whilst brief cooler interludes are possible, temperatures are likely to be a little above average in many areas for the period as a whole.

The remainder of October and into early November will probably maintain a changeable pattern overall, with areas of low pressure often passing close to the UK from the North Atlantic, interspersed by occasional but short-lived ridges of high pressure. This regime will bring showers or longer spells of rain at times, with the wettest and windiest weather typically in the west and northwest, driest conditions more favoured in sheltered southern and eastern parts. Whilst some occasional colder interludes will be possible at times, temperatures are likely to be near or a little above average for the period as a whole.
