Headline:

A dry start but rain soon spreads north, becoming windy.

Today:

A few light showers at first, otherwise a dry start with some brightness in the north. Rain will spread north over the area during the morning, heavy at times on the northwest coast, turning light and patchy later. Windier later. Maximum temperature 15 °C.

Tonight:

Wet and windy at first but rain turning to showers with some clear conditions too. Continuing showery overnight with a stiff westerly wind moving the showers through. Minimum temperature 7 °C.

Saturday:

A blustery day with showers and strong, gusty winds, perhaps some shelter up towards Caithness with a little more sunshine here. Maximum temperature 14 °C.

Outlook for Sunday to Tuesday:

Starting showery again Sunday but brightening up and winds easing in the afternoon, a pleasant end to the weekend. Some spells of rain and southwesterly winds for the new week.

A changeable period is expected, with Atlantic weather systems bringing spells of rain, showers and occasional strong winds. The wettest and windiest conditions are most likely across northern and western areas, although stronger winds may at times extend more widely. Between these unsettled spells, periods of drier and more settled weather are likely, especially in the south and east, where they may last for a few days. Accompanying these may be some overnight fog and frost. Temperatures are expected to be slightly above average overall.

Changeable and occasionally unsettled weather is likely to become more frequent through October, with spells of rain and stronger winds increasingly likely to move in from the Atlantic. Between these periods, some drier and brighter interludes are also expected. As is often the case for October, deeper areas of low pressure may occasionally bring spells of very strong winds. Temperatures are expected to remain slightly above average overall, although brief cooler interludes are possible.
