Today:

Some sunny spells with occasional showers across the south, but cloudier across Caithness, Sutherland and Lewis with outbreaks of occasionally heavy rain. The rain in the north gradually turning lighter and patchier through the afternoon. Breezy in north and west. Maximum temperature 9 °C.

Tonight:

Patchy rain or showers this evening become confined to northern and western coastal areas overnight with long clear spells developing inland. Mainly light winds with a fairly widespread inland frost. Minimum temperature -1 °C.

Thursday:

A few early showers across the far north otherwise a chilly start with sunny spells. Increasing cloud and strengthening winds bring occasionally heavy rain to all but Caithness by evening. Maximum temperature 11 °C.

Outlook for Friday to Sunday:

Remaining unsettled with showers or longer spells of occasionally heavy rain through Friday and the weekend. Windy at times, especially in the Outer Hebrides and west coast on Friday evening.

The changeable and at times unsettled weather is likely to continue through early November, with low pressure dominating the UK. This means further showers or longer spells of rain at times. All parts could see some heavy rain, but it is likely that western areas will be wettest. Strong winds are likely from time to time, with gales or severe gales a possibility. Equally there should also be some, at least brief, drier or clearer interludes, these more prevalent further east, but perhaps becoming a little more widespread and long-lasting by the end of the period. With winds predominantly blowing from a westerly or southwesterly quadrant, above average temperatures are most likely, with a reduced incidence of overnight frost and fog, compared to normal, especially at first.

A gradual transition from an unsettled westerly type to something less unsettled is anticipated through the middle part of the month. With time, greater incidences of high pressure look set to affect the UK, bringing more in the way of dry weather, but also increasing the chances of overnight fog and frost. By later in the month, the majority of any wet and windy weather is more likely to affect areas further to the north. Overall, temperatures look to pan out near to a little above average.
