A mainly cloudy day with the chance of a light shower. A few bright or sunny spells may break through this afternoon. Fresh southeasterly winds at first across Shetland soon easing. Maximum temperature 11 °C.

Tonight:

Dry this evening. Thickening cloud will bring a few outbreaks of rain during the early hours, this turning persistent across Orkney later. Freshening southeasterly winds. Minimum temperature 7 °C.

Thursday:

Rain spreading east during the morning, clearing Orkney by late morning and Shetland mid-afternoon. Brighter weather following on behind. Maximum temperature 9 °C.

Outlook for Friday to Sunday:

Early showers on Friday otherwise dry and sunny. Windy with rain spreading northeast on Saturday, Orkney drying up later. Breezy with a few showers on Sunday.

It will likely remain rather changeable during the first part of this period with showers or occasional longer spells of rain affecting many areas. Whether this takes the form of successive weather systems pushing in from the Atlantic or a more slowly evolving weather pattern remains rather unclear. There may also be some drier and brighter interludes and when winds are light, it should feel quite warm, despite temperatures most likely being close to normal for most. Later in the month more blocked weather patterns become more likely, with high pressure in the vicinity of the UK. This increases the probability of more settled weather, especially in the north but there may still be periods of rain or showers, especially in the south.

Blocked patterns with high pressure near to the UK will probably be dominant during this period with a good deal of dry weather across the UK as whole. Some unsettled interludes could develop at times, especially in the south, where rainfall amounts could be above average. Temperatures will probably be near to or slightly above normal, although some cold nights are still possible.
