Headline:

Very cold with wintry showers near the coast.

Today:

A mostly dry and sunny New Year's Day. Strong winds, especially on coasts, making it feel very cold. There may be an isolated wintry shower near the coast but these will mostly remain off-shore. Maximum temperature 2 °C.

Tonight:

Long clear periods, especially inland. A severe frost developing widely with the cold exacerbated by the north-westerly breeze which will be strong near the coast. Minimum temperature -7 °C.

Friday:

A bitterly cold day with temperatures mostly below freezing. Largely dry and sunny though some coastal wintry showers are possible. Strong winds, especially near the coast, bringing a significant wind-chill. Maximum temperature 0 °C.

Outlook for Saturday to Monday:

Mostly dry and sunny, but cold throughout with widespread overnight frosts. Some coastal wintry showers are likely. Strong winds will make it feel very cold, before gradually easing from Sunday.
