This Evening and Tonight:

Rather cloudy intiially, with some showers, these turning to snow over higher ground. Becoming increasingly dry overnight, perhaps with variable cloud and some clear spells leading to a risk of frost, mainly inland. Light winds. Minimum temperature -1 °C.

Thursday:

Often cloudy at first, perhaps with isolated wintry showers. Some brighter or sunny spells potentially developing, mostly in the afternoon. Light winds. Cold. Maximum temperature 4 °C.

Outlook for Friday to Sunday:

Cold and mostly cloudy through this period, with occasionally brisk winds from the North Sea. Risk of some rain, sleet and hill snow Saturday, although this is currently low confidence.

Southeasterly winds are likely at the start of this period, with below average temperatures and often cloudy conditions. There are likely to be further wintry showers, especially in northeastern areas. Meanwhile, frontal zones, bringing milder conditions and rain, will attempt to move in from the west or southwest. If, or when, they push further northeastwards the chance of some snow or freezing rain increases. The transition between colder and milder conditions remains uncertain, but towards the end of this period, the milder, wetter conditions are likely to have spread across much of the country, and southwestern areas could become rather wet. The cold air will never be far away over the near continent and there's always a small risk that it could still flirt with eastern areas at times.

There is still a very small risk of colder conditions lingering for a time at the start of this period, but it is much more likely that a milder and unsettled theme will probably have become established, with weather systems moving close to or across the UK. This will mean bands of rain and perhaps periods of strong winds spreading in from the west, interspersed with some drier and brighter interludes, but likely bringing above average rainfall amounts overall, especially in the south and west. Temperatures are most likely to become close to or a little above average by early March.
